The Venado Fire that began Friday, July 20, is now just 4 miles from the back gate to our beloved Rancho del Chaparral. There are 318 personnel, including four interagency hotshot crews, along with one type 3 helicopter, three engines, two dozers and a rapid extraction module on scene battling this fire. While we have no girls on property, we do have our rangers, John and Joseph, on site that are working hard cutting firebreaks, moving out equipment and making preparations to evacuate if necessary.
Public and firefighter safety is the number one priority. Values at risk include numerous archaeological and cultural heritage sites, Jemez Pueblo Trust lands and critical habitat for the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse and the Mexican spotted owl. Rancho del Chaparral itself has a 50 year history for 1000's of Girl Scouts. Please keep us and the crews fighting to extinguish the fire in your thoughts.
