Self Guided
Black History Is NM History is a self-guided Black History Month Celebration Patch program designed for Girl Scouts of all levels. This experience invites girls to explore leadership through the stories of Black women who have shaped New Mexico's history, culture, and communities - past and present.
Meet inspiring New Mexico leaders like Ida O. Jackson, an educator and community builder whose dedication to students and families helped shape generations in eastern New Mexico, and Judge Shammara Henderson, the first African American appointed to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, whose leadership continues to open doors and expand representation in our state.
Their stories show Girl Scouts that leadership takes many forms - from classrooms and neighborhoods to courtrooms - and that courage, service, and persistence can create lasting change close to home.
Through age-appropriate learning activities, reflection, creative expression, and meaningful conversations, Girl Scouts will examine what leadership looks like in their own lives while honoring the courage, service, and impact of Black leaders across our state. Girls may participate individually, with family, or with their troop.
The self-guided packet will be available in each registrant's myGS account after registration. To receive the Black History Month Celebration Patch by mail, creative project submissions must be completed and emailed by March 1.
