Ava noticed that kids and families often choose to stay at home, watch TV, and engage with other electronics rather than going outside. She decided to create a geocaching trail to help kids build community, grow their problem-solving skills, and foster cooperation while spending more time outdoors rather than inside on a device. Ava partnered with Ranger Karen Herzenberg, who agreed to replenish her geocache informational pamphlets inside the Nature Center to continue to educate visitors about the nearby geocache trail.
“The main issue the project addressed was to help people get outside. Our project also inspired people to find geocaches, which helped to grow a community. Many people today are not as familiar with their local outdoor areas or how to use navigation tools. Our project matters because it helps teach people, especially kids, how to use critical thinking skills while being outdoors. It also shows people, especially kids, how to use navigational tools. It matters because it inspires kids to get outside and find geocaches, which inspires community and well-being. Finding a geocache can also help people feel good about themselves and boost self-esteem. … We have planted over 5 geocaches and have had more than 50 finders so far!”
