Honoring its Girl Scout history and looking ahead to its next chapter
For decades, Rancho del Chaparral has been a special part of our Girl Scout community. Generations of girls, volunteers, and families built friendships, explored the outdoors, and made memories here. Those experiences remain part of our shared history.
Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails has sold Rancho del Chaparral to the Pueblo of Jemez. Rancho is no longer a Council property or available for Girl Scout camping or reservations.
This transition is significant because of who will steward the land next. Rancho lies within the Pueblo of Jemez’s ancestral lands, and we are grateful that the Pueblo of Jemez will shape its future.
The Pueblo of Jemez shared the following perspective on what this land means to its community:
“The land will give tribal members the opportunity to rediscover and explore the cultural landscape that is mentioned in the Pueblo’s tribal history.”
The Pueblo of Jemez has also shared plans to use the property for education, recreation, mental health, retreats, and other community activities, with opportunities for its youth to reconnect with their cultural landscape.
For GSNMT, the sale provides a one-time opportunity to invest in the Council’s long-term sustainability, better support existing troops and volunteers, and bring Girl Scout experiences to more girls and communities across New Mexico. Outdoor experiences will continue to be an important part of Girl Scouting.
We thank everyone who helped make Rancho a meaningful place for generations of Girl Scouts. We carry that history with us as we look ahead.
