Public invited to shop local at Girl Scouts Holiday Craft Fair this weekend
While many New Mexicans have been searching for holiday gifts that don’t break the bank, young female entrepreneurs have been hard at work preparing for their big business debut. This Saturday, Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails will host the 3rd annual Holiday Entrepreneur Craft Fair, featuring unique, handmade items made by Girl Scouts in 1st through 12th grade.
Saturday, December 2nd
Explore Academy (6600 Gulton Ct NE, Albuquerque)
9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Free Admission!
“Roughly 65% of girls who can see themselves running their own business one day believe that their gender will be a stumbling block,” said Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails CEO, Rebecca Latham. “It’s very important that girls be given opportunities at an early age to grow their confidence and become successful in a business leadership role.”
Some of the items that will be for sale at the Holiday Entrepreneur Craft Fair include holiday ornaments and wreaths, New Mexico gifts, tie-dyed dog toys and bandanas, jewelry, soaps, home décor, nature-inspired calendars, notecards, and bookmarks. Each booth will feature handmade items created by New Mexico Girl Scouts, and 100% of the proceeds stay with the entrepreneurs themselves.
“We really hope that people will stop by the craft fair to show the girls that their work is valued and that there is a place for them in business,” said Latham. “All the products they will be selling reflect their own individual personalities, and our community can do a lot of good by supporting these Girl Scouts and their startup businesses.”
Nationwide, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles. Only 5% of CEOs and 12% of other top executives in the S&P 500 are women. And a meager 20% of start-ups are founded by women, who are less likely to receive capital investment or to pursue entrepreneurship than men. Yet studies show that female-founded start-ups generate more revenue over time and more revenue per dollar invested than male-founded start-ups.
The Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails Holiday Entrepreneur Craft Fair will take place on Saturday, December 2, from 9 am – 2 pm at Explore Academy (6600 Gulton Court NE, Albuquerque). There will be a snack bar and live music. Some booths may take cash only.
